Now, we all know Discord is on the ropes and I'm personally not a fan of Matrix (among other things), so it's been a little tough trying to find something. 

And this is the part where I go on about the XMPP protocol (aka Jabber), once again.  But I think I've done that twice now, so I'll just link you to the official public channel below.

If you still want that Discord mouthfeel, Fluxer is that! More than one channel and the option to VC once you're verified. It's still in beta, though. I may make a Discord if there's an actual popular demand for it.

If you're not familiar with forums, don't feel bad-- you have to start somewhere, right? And I'm happy you started here! 

I'll point you to some tutorials:
Both are  presented by 32bit Cafe, which is one of my many site recommendations for everything concerning "smallweb." But that's a whole other kettle of fish. (But, pssst, if you want to detour, there is a Primer about smallweb stuff!) 

There is also YesterWeb's blurb on Social Etiquette, which wouldn't hurt to look at either.

Basically, Do Nothing to Harsh The Vibe-- but the devil is always in the details. I highly recommend reading our CoC. That way you can get a feel for the intended vibe and what to expect.

After that, let's dig in!
To fully participate, you will need to register: username, email, and password. Depending on spam countermeasures in place, your account may also need to be approved by an admin. Once that's done, go to your User Control Panel and add an avatar, a little bit about yourself, and website link if you want to! Oh, and don't forget to post an Introduction! And in general... just post! And reply! 

Don't forget about the Help page! Useful info is there, including a cheatsheet for MyCode.

What are some extra fun things around here?
There are custom groups! Go to your User Control Panel and then "Group Memberships." Join as many as you wish (though you'll need to be approved for Webring Members).

You can then set a group as your "Display Group"; that'll appear on your profile with that label and custom icon.

I Don't Get Emails! What Gives?
Make sure to whitelist these addresses and check your Spam folders.

When I copy-and-paste, the text is really small.
I may have managed to implement a fix for this, but it's best to "Paste as Plain Text" or "Paste Without Formatting" for a cleaner experience.
How do I use Markdown?
Use the (md) (/md) tags! (And use the square brackets!)
